AVERT produces booklets/pamphlets on HIV/AIDS and
sexual health, and they are available on our website to
download for free. Please click
here to see our full range. We do not print and sell
our booklets. Many organisations however do.
Booklets and pamphlets are useful to use in group
situations, such as in a schoolroom, and are equally
helpful when read on their own. They can provide a great
deal of information in a short space and are cost
effective when bought in bulk. Organisations will often
have their materials available to download for free from
their website.
Below we have written a list of organisations that we
think could be useful when looking for HIV/AIDS and
sexual health materials, including booklets/pamphlets.
Remember that this list is not comprehensive and there
will be many other places to find what you are looking
for. Also be aware that a booklet produced in one
country may still be relevant for use in another, if the
information is not too regionally specific. Try
contacting your local government department of health or
health promotion unit. Try contacting sexual health
organisations operating in your country or find websites
who can post materials to you, or where you can download
them. The list is broken down into UK, US and

A Survey of Sex Education Provision in Secondary
Schools
James Lawrence, Annabel Kanabus and David Regis
This book takes a detailed look into the
standard of sex education provided in UK
secondary schools. It asks what topics are
covered: at what depth the topics are dicussed;
at what age the different topics are covered;
how satisfied they are with the sex education
they provide; and what factors influence their
provision
It is an excellent resource for providers of
sex education, helping them to assess their
current standard of provision and make
improvements from the recommendations and
example of a thorough policy statement. |

The following three volume book is a publication
by the World Health Organisation, and as such is
subject to this
disclaimer on the WHO site. This publication
may be downloaded and used for personal or
educational purposes if accompanied by an
acknowledgement of WHO as the source of the
material. Reproduction for any use other than
educational or non-commercial use requires
explicit authorization in writing from the
WHO.The book is a collection of HIV and STD
prevention strategies, aimed at those who work
with young people in schools. The book comes in
three parts - a handbook for curriculum
planners, a teacher's guide and a book of
student activities.
Handbook for Curriculum Planners is aimed at
those who work with students aged from 12 to 16,
and contains help on how to plan a teaching
program on HIV, AIDS and sexually transmitted
diseases, based on interactive activities. The
Teacher's Guide contains information for
teachers about planning and enacting lessons
about HIV and AIDS and lessons about responsible
behaviour, with activities to develop awareness
of these subjects. Also included is advice about
teaching methods and classroom management,
testing and evaluation, and out of class
learning. The Students' Activities book contains
activities to inform students about HIV, AIDS
and STDs, and activities aimed at promoting
safer sex and examining attitudes and prejudices
surrounding sex and infection
|
Handbook for Curriculum Planners
There is increasing consensus about the need
for AIDS education for young people. Studies
have shown that sex and AIDS education may
lead to a delay in the onset of sexual
activity, and to the use of safer sex
practices among those students who are
sexually active. However, curriculum
planners often lack examples of curricula,
classroom activities and learning materials.
This resource package has been compiled to
assist curriculum planners to design
HIV/AIDS/STD education programmes for their
own school systems, for students aged
between 12 and 16. The programme presented
in this package is based on participatory
methods, as these have been shown to be
particularly effective for the teaching of
behavioural skills.

Unit 2 : Responsible behaviour: delaying sex
Unit 3 : Responsible behaviour: protected sex

|
|
Students' Activities
Infection with HIV/STD occurs in specific
risk situations or scenarios: a girl is
pressured by her boyfriend into having sex,
[...give examples from the situation
assessment study]. Young people in these
situations need to have the knowledge and
skills to respond ad-equately, for example,
how to say “no” or how to propose
alternatives.
Through the achievement of a set of
learning objectives, the curriculum aims to
increase knowledge and to develop skills,
positive attitudes and motivation.
